Bird Doughnuts

You might recall my post regarding Bird earlier this year. I haven't yet been back to try other things on the menu. However, I have stopped by a couple of times to grab a coffee and a glazed doughnut (okay maybe a couple) from their 'Doughnut Hatch'. Their doughnuts are truly amazing and unique - no fuss, loads of flavours and the perfect size (i.e. very big).

Every day they have a variety of different flavours such as coconut, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate... sold in the restaurant or from their' Doughnut Hatch' until they are sold out which they generally are.

Bird claims to serve what will probably some of the best fried chicken you have ever had. And you know what they are probably right. I have looked high and low since living in London for a place that sells great fried chicken and we might have just found it tucked away in Shoreditch.

We wanted to go for something a little different the other night and opted for the chicken & waffle burger - boneless thighs and thick cut bacon, cheddar & onion stuffed waffles, hot sauce and syrup (pictured above). Although it was pretty amazing, it was a bit too much for my liking and in my view took away from the amazing fried chicken. Next time - because obviously there will be a next time - I will probably opt for a couple of pieces of friend chicken, buttermilk ranch sauce and some good sides.

The chicken was absolutely amazing; fresh, cooked to perfection and perfectly fried. The perfect meal you want to tuck into after a long night out the day before. Oh and best of all, they do take away.

I hear their doughnuts are amazing as well - sold fresh every morning from the Doughnut Hatch until they run out.

The blue legume is a chain with restaurants in Islington Stoke Newington and Crouch Hill. They are all generally packed on a weekend, especially during brunch hours and it is probably best to ring them up to book a table. Their poached eggs are always a success and everything is affordable and good. They have a very wholesome approach to food and don't expect to give your tastebuds the best culinary experience they have had but you will be feed and you will be feed well. They also have a good selection of fresh juices and their salads are also a decent size.

Sadly they don't accept dogs, unless you are sat on the terrace.

Dum Dum Donutterie

Welcome to the baked doughnut evolution - Dum Dum Donutterie - where doughnuts are baked multiple times but not fried. These doughnuts are light, fluffy and sweet rather than oily and greasy - which let's be honest in some cases does the trick as well. They say these doughnuts have just teh right amount of fat. It all sounded too good, we just had to check out their new store at Boxpark.

Dum Dum don't only make 'traditional doughnuts', no that would be too easy. They also make cronuts, also known as crodoughs, and in this case croissant doughnuts. They are a mix between a croissant and a doughnut. We tried the the Zebra croissant doughnut - Layers of Croissant dough and chocolate croissant dough. Filled with chocolate butter crème and decorated with dark chocolate. I couldn't resist and had to try their Peter Andre's yum yum dum dum - I mean with a name like that. This little wonder is filled with Dulce de Leche crème and glazed while still warm and drizzled in chocolate.

The 'traditional doughnuts' come in a variety of flavours and fillings - we went for the double dipped almond glaze, the crème brûlée, the chocolate ganache and hazelnut and the strawberry purée fondant. So basically the only two we didn't try - now I really feel like a pig - were the raspberry preserve and the banatoffe. Oh well I guess we have an excuse to go back.

The result was an empty and sad looking pink box. I found the Zebra cronut absolutely delicious and delighted it didn't have all the oil from a traditional cronut - which was my big disappointment with the cronut, and that filling was just perfect - chocolate butter crème and decorated with dark chocolate. My favourite was probably the traditional crème brûlée doughnut which was filled with fresh custard creme coated with a crunchy caramel glaze.
